'American Idol': Kris Allen, reality show process praised by Keith Urban

Kris Allen has been out on the road this summer with a number of different acts, and one of them specifically has plenty of nice things to say about him. In a new interview with Zap2It, Keith Urban (who also performed with Kris during the season eight "American Idol" finale) had this to say about having him on tour:

"We've done a few shows, and we have a couple more coming up. He's great! I love him. He's just got a good, real singer-songwriter vibe about him, and he's really finding his own way. He has a great voice and a good heart, and I like him immensely."

In addition to Urban, Allen has also performed with the Barenaked Ladies. His newest single, "The Truth", is still climbing up the Hot AC airplay charts.

Have you had the opportunity to see Kris Allen out on tour this summer, and if so what did you think? Feel free to share your thoughts with a comment and check back soon for more "American Idol" news

Kris Allen Won't Be Eclipsed By Adam Lambert, Fans Insist

Just what i had to say! - One reason Allen's first single, "Live Like We're Dying," might not have gotten as much breathless hype as Lambert's first two songs — the "2012" super-ballad "Time for Miracles" and the glitter-sprinkled, dance-remix-ready title track "For Your Entertainment" — is because Allen's song is yet another cover. That's the theory espoused by Derrius Lockett, webmaster of the Allen-centric KrisAllenFan.com, who likes Allen's do-over of the tune by Irish pop band the Script but was hoping for an original for the first single. "Live Like We're Dying" has gotten a solid, if slow, start on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, resting at #92 at press time after hitting #89 following its release and settling in at #38 on the current top 40 chart. By contrast, Lambert's "Miracles" debuted at #50 on the Hot 100 two weeks ago before falling out of the running, while "For Your Entertainment" has not yet charted.

"We, the fans, just wanted something new," he said. "As for Adam, I think it's just because he has all these star friends like Katy Perry, Ferras and many others. He even went to the Michael Jackson premiere in London with Katy Perry, where he could talk about his new song — which I do love — and CD, [and] before that he did the announcement for the American Music Awards, which I think Kris should have done."

Lockett lamented that the only places he's seen Allen are at a recent Miami Dolphins football game and some other scattered appearances that don't add up to the blitz from Lambert. That said, "Kris has the star potential, too, and I think his CD will be #1 on the charts," Lockett predicted.

Kris Allen song snippets: Let's rank 'em from best to not-so-best!

In some ways, there’s no experience less satisfying than listening to song-snippet leaks from albums you’ve been anticipating for mini-eternities. (What? After an hour of smelling a chocolate cake baking in an oven, you’d be happy with a crumb?) But as someone who happened to be in a three-day corporate meeting last week when Italian Amazon leaked 30-second samples of the 13 songs from Kris Allen’s self-titled debut, I can attest that, in fact, I’d rather have had an all-too-brief musical tease than absolutely no music at all. And while our Music Mix blog has already run an item on the American Idol season 8 champ’s tracks, I figured that as EW’s resident Idoloonie, I had an obligation to weigh in on ‘em, too. (Don’t fret, Adam Lambert fans, I’ve got his 19 snippets on my to-do list, too! But that’s a lot o’ music to digest and dish!)

As for the man who wears a Henley like no other, I’m only going to dish the nine tracks I haven’t discussed publicly before. I’ve already betrayed a Fatal Attraction-level obsession with Kris’ debut single “Live Like We’re Dying” on two separate occasions, so I’ll refrain from boiling the bunny with a third go-’round, and last week, I dissected “Before We Come Undone,” “Can’t Stay Away,” and “Written All Over My Face” (loved all three of ‘em!) after Kris premiered them at a Miami Dolphins tailgate party. Now, while it’s not easy (and probably not fair) to judge songs on the basis of 30-second snapshots, I’m nonetheless going to tackle Kris’ snippets in descending order from least- to most-fave. Here we go!
“Heartless”: Not exactly sure what producer Salaam Remi was thinking, but the whole joy of Kris’ seminal Idol rendition was its simplicity, the way it deconstructed Kanye’s R&B jam and distilled its gorgeous melody, stuttery rhythms, and haunting lyrics into a sum that was even greater than its parts. Here, it sounds like Kris’ voice gets lost in the overly busy mix. WTF? (Why the face?)

“Alright With Me”: This jangly little ditty — co-written with the Fray’s Joe King — bops along pleasantly enough, but there’s a slightly vacant vibe to the melody and arrangement that make me worry it might sit well with the American Idol swaybots. (Sorry, after “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” I should never again use that word in conjunction with our Pocket Idol.) Plus, lyrically — “I say to look, but you turn away/ I say we put our best foot forward” — this isn’t really speaking to me, either. If every second counts on the clock that’s ticking, I don’t think this is gonna be the Kris Allen track I play on repeat loop. Just sayin’.

“Lifetime”: It’s next to impossible for me to weigh in on this puppy, mostly because the half-minute sample doesn’t allow any windup going into the chorus, and therefore potentially robs it of maximum impact. But unlike “Before We Come Undone” (for example) this melody hasn’t instantaneously gotten stuck in my brain, or wormed its way into everyday conversation.* I sense possible album filler, but hope I’m proven wrong when I hear the whole enchilada.

“Let It Rain”: Now we’re gettin’ somewhere. A straight-up-the-middle pop track with a title that didn’t necessarily get my pulse pounding, but I have to say the piano line that arrives toward the end of the chorus is quite lovely, and leads into a slightly breathier version of Kris’ vocals than we’re used to hearing. As Frida declared in her post-ABBA smash, “I know there’s something going on.” And I am most curious to hear what exactly that something is.

“Red Guitar”: Also known as The One Kris Allen Wrote Before Idol. I suspect (or perhaps hope) Kris is speaking metaphorically when he declares his life was changed by the face of a red guitar, but then again, as a man whose equally adept strumming the strings as he is behind the keyboard, I won’t begrudge him a literal recitation of his passions, either. I mean, if I was a songwriter, you know I’d be jamming every other number about horse racing, my DVR, and the men’s clothing department at Target. Also: The melody here is super-pretty.

“Is It Over”: There’s a bluesy, later-Aerosmith vibe going on, and I mean that in a good way. It’s exciting to see that the most low-key of this season’s Idols isn’t afraid to stretch his musical boundaries, and from what I can tell, it’s gonna pay dividends on this track. Then again, long-standing Kris aficionados already knew our boy wasn’t afraid to color outside the lines, or throw the damn coloring book out the window altogether. (Sorry, methinks that metaphor went haywire, as metaphors often do when staring into the eye of the Idol.) Anyhoo, I’m diggin’ this half-minute sample like an old soul record.

“The Truth”: “Honesty is honestly the hardest thing for me right now,” Kris declares on a ballad (co-written by Train’s Pat Monahan) that sounds bigger and more ambitious than anything we heard during his season 8 run. And guess what? The champ’s muscular voice is more than up to the challenge. This one has the potential to be the best heartbreak ditty Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t used during a surgical/romantic struggle montage. J. Apostrophe. Effiing. Dore.

“I Need To Know”: Loving the rawness of Kris’ vocal on this one. It’s as if the stress and strain of every second of the Idol experience — the show, the tour, the insanely paced recording process — has taken its toll on our guy and on his voice in the most poetic way possible. All we get here lyrically are five repetitions of the song title (preceded by the line “Can you hear what I’m sayin’”) and yet so much more is conveyed. That’s no small task. To paraphrase Kiki Dee, I sense this one’s gonna go breakin’ my heart.

“Bring It Back”: Here we have a collaboration between Kris and London-based tunesmith Eg White (“Chasing Pavements”), and the melody is preposterously gorgeous. I particularly like the way Kris’ voice rises, then crumbles, on the unexpected denouement to the chorus (“what fate’s been telling me”). At once retro and totally current, it could be the perfect accompaniment for a fetching movie star as he/she races to the airport in the pouring rain, seeking one last chance at romantic redemption. Also: Could be a major radio smash. Make it happen, 19 peeps!

There’s my take on the Kris Allen song-snippet leaks, now what do you think? Are you in agreement with my ranking from best to worst? If not, how would you order the nine new tracks? Which one has the best shot at being a hit? Which one are you destined to play on repeat? Which one doesn’t belong here? Holla back in the comments section below!

* If one is having toast prepared by his spouse on a Saturday morning, for example, he might urge said spouse to “make it before, make it before, the show…comes back from the break…”).

Kris Allen's Album Doesn't Have A Title Yet, But MTV News Can Help!

November 17 is rapidly approaching, and Kris Allen is working overtime to wrap up his debut album. In addition to shooting a music video for "Live Like We're Dying" this weekend, spending time in Kevin Rudolf's studio, and continuing to write and record music, Allen has been making the rounds doing radio interviews and an epic phoner with Entertainment Weekly. (Kris, your people have my phone number. Just sayin'.)

One of the last details Kris needs to settle on? The all-important album title!

Since I've got the Kris Allen beat covered here at MTV News (perhaps too covered, my therapist says) I thought it'd be fun to make a list of five potential album titles Kris Allen should avoid at all costs.

1. Little Rock
I suggested this one to Kris during our last brief interview. (The title works on two levels! He's from Little Rock and he's short! Also, I'm a jackass!) Understandably, Kris reacted as though I suggested he do a reggae remix of "No Boundaries." You're right, Kris. Little Rock is a terrible idea. Ignore me.

2. Allentown
Only works if he plans on covering Billy Joel's ode to the working class. And even then, I wouldn't advise it.

3. Kris Allen Sings Ryan Tedder Songs That All Sound Vaguely Similar And Familiar
Dear God, I hope this doesn't happen, especially since OneRepublic is dropping its sophomore album the same day as Kris' debut. Too much Tedder. My iPod will spontaneously combust and/or turn into a brick of cheese.

4. Not Adam Lambert
The humble dude has always been a gracious winner, especially after topping Lambert back in May. ("Idol" message boards just exploded, by the way.) But perhaps Kris has been too gracious. The last thing he needs to do is remind the world that Adam Lambert's release is just around the corner. Keep the spotlight on yourself, mate. You earned it, even if 15 very vocal (and very annoying) conspiracy theorists are still screaming about power voting.

5. Jim Cantiello's Sneakers Rule
I know you were crushing on my kicks last time we spoke, but you already released an album called Brand New Shoes before "American Idol." Steer clear of the footwear jargon on your major-label debut.

Until we get the official Kris album title from 19 Recordings and Jive Records, let this blog post serve as a hub for your suggestions! Do you have ideas? Leave them in the comments below.

Kris Allen Talks About His First Single, 'Live Like We're Dying'

NEW YORK — "American Idol" winner Kris Allen had a morning of firsts. He not only had the world premiere of his first single, "Live Like We're Dying," at New York radio station Z100, but it was also the first time he'd ever heard one of his songs on the radio.

"It was really cool. You dream of this day, you dream of having a single out and having it on the radio, so this was a cool day," he told radio DJ Elvis Duran and the Z100 morning-show team.

The strummy, sing-songy tune had apparently been earmarked as a single for Kris since he began working on his post-"Idol" album back in May. Allen told MTV News, "[The song] was actually one that we had listened to really early on, and we kind of just fell in love with it. Everyone did."

A cover of a barely released track by Irish pop rockers the Script, "Live Like We're Dying" joins the tradition of "life wisdom" songs that urge the listener to live each moment as if it were their last. Think of it as a less schmaltzy version of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" or a more dude-friendly twist on Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten." Incidentally, Bedingfield's smash was co-written and produced by the same duo who worked with Allen on this track: Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner. Two of the Script members are also credited as co-writers.

The positive message is merely one reason Allen was drawn to the song. Responding to one specific lyric, "So if your life flashed before you / What would you wish you would have done?," Kris admitted that if he were suddenly on his way out, there's a big regret in his life. "I wish I would have skydived. It's random, but I have always wanted to," Allen said. "I'm really scared to, but I think that it would be the biggest rush."

While album details are still hard to come by from the tight-lipped "Idol" champ, Allen admitted that "Live Like We're Dying" is just one of many songs on his still-in-the-works CD with producers Frampton and Kipner. "We got a couple different producers on the album, but there's a couple songs that [Frampton and Kipner have produced]. And I'm actually going to London to work with them again."

Should Allen score any free time in England, the Beatles fanatic hopes to hit up Abbey Road to take in some mop-top history. "I hope I get the time. I will totally [take a pic of me crossing Abbey Road]."

Kris Allen's still-untitled major-label debut will be available everywhere November 17. "Live Like We're Dying" will hit iTunes on September 29.

Kris Allen Debuts First Single

Although he’s now dropping in on radio stations to promote his first single, it wasn’t long ago that Allen almost gave up on his dream of becoming a singer. “I was playing in bars, playing three hour shows, singing every song under the sun, taking requests from people,” he says of the days when he was trying to break into the industry. “I was actually trying to go back to school [before Idol]. This was one of the last ditch efforts. I’m just glad it worked out!”

That last ditch effort landed him at the top on what would become a historic season of Idol — Paula Abdul’s last. “I’m glad I was able to be a part of her last season. She was great. She cared for all of us. We got to know her the most, probably. She’s just a sweetheart,” Allen said. “I’ve met Ellen [DeGeneres] as well, and she’s great. She’s awesome. I love Ellen to death.”

Allen, whose still-untitled first album is due out Nov. 17, says he’ll miss his home in Conway, Ark., while he’s making the rounds to promote his album and the song. “I miss everything about that place. I miss Chick-Fil-A. It is the best chicken sandwich out there,” he says. “I love it, man. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.”
